The Binnenpoort dates back to the 14th century. Over the centuries, the gate has been cherished and embellished. Until the beginning of the 20th century: then it seemed that the gate would have to make way for the oh so important traffic. Members of Voet and a few notables jumped into the breach and ensured that the Binnenpoort was preserved. Nowadays, no one would even think of demolishing the Binnenpoort. The monument is a piece of living history that tells the story of medieval architecture, urban beauty and residents who stood up for their city.
a poem by Adri van Witzenburg, in which he criticizes the course of events:
The Binnenpoort seems sturdy and powerful,
But it worries the Vroedschap.
Although its silhouette is still mighty,
Watches over Culemborg.
Under its now weakened walls,
Her unstable fate shudders.
While the winds awaken
The birds of mockery.
Those who quarrel with the old times,
They demolish unharmed.
If not the hammer of our will,
Resists against it.
This was done by the Vroedschap, when its members,
Declared that the Binnenpoort,
As a sign from a great past,
Belongs to Culemborg.
