The many half-timbered houses contribute greatly to the charm of Wissembourg as a cozy, picturesque little town with a French flair just across the border from Germany.
The town's representative large buildings are almost all built from red Alsatian sandstone.
The winegrowers and many local craftsmen, on the other hand, built their houses in the half-timbered style. Half-timbering was cheaper, the building material was more readily available than sandstone and offered greater flexibility for conversions and extensions, which was an advantage for the houses that combined living and working under one roof.
