The Abbey of Wissembourg was founded in the 7th century by East Frankish noblemen on an island of Lauter. The Benedictines who worked here in the subsequent period to a considerable influence, so that the abbey is considered one of the richest of the Holy Roman Empire. It was secularized in 1524.
The predominantly Gothic church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul dates back to the end of the 13th century. The laterally positioned Romanesque bell tower dates back to the predecessor building from the 11th century. Noteworthy are frescoes in the church from the 14th and 15th centuries, not least the unfinished high Gothic cloister of the monastery on the north side of the church, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the Upper Rhine. There are also a number of tombstones of historically significant abbots.

The Church of St. Peter and Paul (French: Église Saint-Pierre-et-Paul) is the former church of the 1524 secularized Benedictine Abbey of the city of Wissembourg in northern Alsace. With an interior area of 1320 m² (60 m long and 22 m wide), it is one of the largest and most imposing churches in Bas-Rhin, outside Strasbourg.
The mainly Gothic building still has a laterally positioned Romanesque bell tower from the previous building, which was built in the 11th century under the direction of the abbot Samuel.
The present church was mostly built at the end of the 13th century under the direction of the abbot Edelin.

On the side you can still see a part of the former cloister of the monastery.

The former abbey church of St. Peter and Paul in Weißenburg is a great Gothic building. Even the exterior arouses curiosity with its diverse shape and there is a lot to discover inside. The church is surrounded by a special atmosphere. The church is definitely worth a visit!

Striking are the two different towers: the massive west tower dates back to an earlier building from the eleventh century, the other is gothic from the 14th century

The Wissembourger abbey church "Saints-Pierre-et-Paul" is built in the Gothic style and is the second largest church in Alsace after the Strasbourg Cathedral - a clear indication of the influence and wealth of the Benedictine abbey that was located here.
The largest part dates from the 13th and 14th century - there is, however, also a walk-in cloister behind the church, which contains the remains of a Romanesque chapel from the 11th century.

In addition to the building itself, the magnificent Dubois organ from 1766 should also be emphasized.

The Church of St. Peter and Paul is the second largest church in Alsace in terms of area after Strasbourg Cathedral. Only the square tower remains of the Romanesque abbey. The church was built under Abbot Edelin at the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century. The painted glass windows, the rose windows and the frescoes as well as the unfinished cloister from the 14th century are noteworthy. The famous Benedictine monastery was secularized in 1524.

The church "Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul" is almost too big for a small town like Wissembourg. Predominantly Gothic, built at the end of the 13th century, with beautiful colorful windows, murals, sculptures and an impressive organ. Definitely worth a visit

The church building is absolutely worth seeing. I can only recommend a visit from the inside.

Directly opposite the salt house of Weissenburg stands the Eglise St-Pierre-et-St-Paul from the 14th century. After Strasbourg Cathedral, the Peter and Paul Abbey Church is the second largest Gothic church in Alsace and has two striking and very different towers. The Romanesque west tower dates back to a previous building. The wall paintings inside the church are of cultural and historical importance. Here, an eleven-meter-high Christopher is impressive, carrying the baby Jesus on his left arm.
On the north side of the Eglise St-Pierre-et-St-Paul we find an unfinished Gothic cloister from the 14th century. Voluminous gravestones of important abbots and stone sarcophagi were housed here.
Slightly hidden next to it is the tiny Romanesque chapel, which is so dark that only the colorful stained glass windows are noticeable. In the course of secularization, the Benedictine monastery was dissolved in 1524.

This place of worship, the former monastery church of Wissenbourg, was dedicated to the two saints Peter and Paul (Peter/Pierre and Paul), also known as the "prince of the apostles". Their common memorial day in the calendar of saints is June 29th.
                            * Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on Lake Genesareth when he - together with his brother - was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisher of men". According to Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two thousand year long line of popes - currently Francis - are his successors. In statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted with two keys in his hand; this attribute refers to the Bible verse in Matthew: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Chapter 16, Verse 19).
                            * Paul was initially an opponent of the Christian movement and was not called to the apostleship of Jesus Christ during his lifetime like the other apostles, but was only converted later with the famous "Damascus experience". His attribute is the sword with which he was executed; according to the Roman law of the time, this was a "privilege" (quick death and not, like other types of execution, associated with a long, painful death struggle) that was available to the citizens of Rome.

Beautiful old church, as Yuri says, almost a real masterpiece for such a small town. But it probably shows how important religion was in earlier times for the population of the area and what power the church had at that time, especially in smaller places

The abbey church of St. Peter and Paul in Wissembourg, built in the late 13th century as the church of the then important Benedictine monastery of Weissenburg, is the second largest church in Alsace after the Strasbourg cathedral and stands out for its exemplary Gothic proportions. The square church tower dates back to an 11th-century church built under Samuel Abbey. The (unfinished) cloister dates back to the 14th century.

The Gothic nave invites you to linger with its impressive stained glass windows. With a bit of luck, the baroque organ can also be heard, filling the interior of the church with its pipes.

It is the center and focal point of the town of Wissembourg: the Abbey Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. In the 7th century, a Benedictine monastery was founded here, which soon became one of the richest in the Holy Roman Empire. The monastery ensured the development and growth of the surrounding town. The present church dates back to the 13th century and is the second-largest Gothic church in Alsace, second only to Strasbourg Cathedral. Built of local sandstone, it is a focal point in the town of Wissembourg, which has a population of 8,000.
