The Berumerfehn Canal was dug from 1794 onwards in order to be able to transport peat north by water. Since the Berumerfehner Moor was ten meters higher than the water level of the Norder Galgentief, the construction of chamber locks, the Verlaaten, was necessary for peat shipping.
Next to the lock on Verlaatsweg, which was built in 1850, is the historic Torschi “Selika”, which can be used for excursions on the Mittelwieke. The movement is carried out exclusively by the muscle power of the members of the Berumerfehn local association, standing like the gondoliers in Venice.
