Berumerfehn Canal

To transport the peat from Berumerfehn to the north, the Norder Fehngesellschaft (Norder Fehn Companie) had Oldenburg workers build the Berumerfehn Canal, also known as the Fehn Canal or Moortief, in 1794 - the Halbemond refused because they feared peat competition. Until the end of 1930, the transport took place on barges that were grained. Peat was shipped north and fertilizer for the fields (sea silt, clay, street manure, waste) to Berumerfehn. - As a transport route, the canal is of no importance today; Since the 1970s, the Berumerfehn Canal (eastern arm), the official name, has flowed into the Addinggaster Tief near Nadörst. The canal is a second order body of water. - See also the explanations of the field names "Fehnkanal" and "Addinggaster Tief".

The canal was built around 200 years ago when the village of Berumerfehn (formerly Norden Fehn) was founded. The water was used to drain the moors and to transport the peat to the north of the city. At the time, peat was the preferred fuel in large parts of East Frisia.
The peat was transported on peat barges, pulled from a towpath by people or draft animals.
Today the attractive hiking and cycling path runs along the route of this towpath.

Always along the canal you get from the north to Berumerfehn. There is a former loading point for peat (Verlaat) and you can make excursions on the canal with an old peat barge.
