"... Wolfgang Kolbe (* 24 March 1929 in Putzar near Anklam in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania; † 18 March 2000 in Wuppertal) was a German entomologist specialising in beetles.

Life and work
After graduating from high school in Pasewalk in 1948, Kolbe studied biology and chemistry at the East Berlin University of Education. In 1956 he went to Sprockhövel and continued his studies at the Pedagogical Academy in Wuppertal. After working as a teacher, he was given a teaching position for biology at the Wuppertal University of Education in 1961, later supplemented by a teaching position at the Siegerland University of Education. At the same time, in the summer of 1961 he began studying biology at the University of Cologne, which he completed with a doctorate in 1965.

In January 1969 Kolbe took over the management of the Natural Sciences and City History Museum in Wuppertal, which was renamed the Fuhlrott Museum in 1973 - after the discoverer of the Neanderthal. He ran this museum for 25 years until his retirement in 1994. During this time he expanded the museum, created an ecological state collection of North Rhine-Westphalian beetles with the Rhenish Coleopterologists' Association and carried out ecological research - especially of the beetle fauna - of the Burgholz state forest, where there is an educational trail named after him. ..."

Kolbe founded an ecological collection of beetles from North Rhine-Westphalia. But in 2008, "his" museum in Wuppertal was closed. Now the beetle collection is in Bonn at the Museum König t1p.de/hxjek

The marking of the Kolbeweg looks like a tick. It was only when I saw the memorial stone with the stag beetle that it gradually dawned on me that it was supposed to represent a beetle. If only they had at least used a stencil with a recognizable beetle! Honoring the researcher might be worth all that effort.
