The roundel, which was built in the early 16th century, is part of the second city wall, the part that encloses the so-called Nieuwstad south of the Helpoort. On the northeast side of the roundel, the city wall continues to Poort Waerachtig, a nineteenth-century breakthrough through the city wall, and the roundel De Vijf Koppen.

It is the vernacular that has assigned the name Haet ende Nijd to the roundel. In 1528 the roundel was referred to as 'het nuwe bolwerck' and in 1771 the roundel was referred to as the polvertoren, or powder tower. Apparently, as part of the rampart, the roundel originally had no name of its own.
Weathered stone with text starting with Haet ende Nijd
Haet ende Nijd owes its current name to the opening line of a text placed above the entrance to the upper casemate. The stone with the text is heavily eroded.

    The text read:
HAET AND ENVY BEN ICK GHENANT
    MYNEN VIANDEN BEN ICK UNBECANT
ENDE VOLMACKT AS ME MACH SIEN
BI MEISTER HERMAN I D ZARAZIEN
    DO ONE SCREEF FEED
DUYSENT FIVE HUNDRED AND SESTINE YEARS

    ...

Several times the people of Liège besieged the city of Maastricht from Saint Peter, where the prince bishop had taken refuge; the name of the roundel apparently refers to such relationships. In 1408, for example, Liège troops appeared in front of the city wall for the second year in a row. It is said that they used the malicious tactic of bombarding the city with corpses in an attempt to spread the plague among the inhabitants.

The name of the roundabout "Haet en Nyt" is taken from the inscription on the memorial stone in the back facade of the roundabout. It states that 1515 was founded by Herman in Zarazien, who at that time managed the city's finances. Together with the adjoining city wall, they formed the wall of the Nieuwstad.
The roundel was completed in 1516. Around 1550, a mound of earth was laid against the wall on the city side and two casemates were built in the rondelle for the arrangement of cannons. In the years 1887-1888 the Waerachtig Gate was built between the two circular towers.
At the roundabout 'Haet ende Nijt' we see the entrance to the upper cannon casemate at the back of this fortification. Unlike the five heads, they have not been excavated and give a better impression of the original condition.
