Don't underestimate the effort. There are no inclines, but depending on the section of the route, the surface can sap your strength. With wider tires and not too high air pressure you have an advantage. When I cycle from Mölln to Lauenburg, depending on the wind direction, I choose to take the train for a stretch.

In itself this is a great route, but after 150km on this surface you are really shaken up and everything still vibrates. I would wish for a slightly better surface than sometimes very coarse gravel, soft gravel (because there is too much gravel) or soft sand. It doesn't have to be top asphalt right away, but it's very strenuous over long distances because there are virtually no recovery phases because you always have to pedal.

The Alte Salzstraße cycle path leads from Lüneburg to Lübeck on the traces of the historic salt trade route. It connects the two Hanseatic cities and is 115 kilometers long. The bike route is mostly on the Elbe Lateral Canal and the Elbe-Lübeck Canal, passing the Scharnebeck ship lift, the Elbe near Lauenburg, numerous locks, a ferry in Siebeneichen, reaching the Trave in Lübeck and ending in Travemünde the Baltic Sea.

The Elbe-Lübeck Canal connects the Elbe near Lauenburg with the Trave in Lübeck over a length of around 60 kilometers and thus creates the connection between the Elbe and the Baltic Sea. The canal opened in 1900.

Today, the Elbe-Lübeck Canal is mainly used for smaller inland vessels to transport bulk goods and for pleasure boats. The renewal of bridges and the enlargement of locks are planned in order to be able to use the canal again more for inland navigation in the future.

The Elbe Lateral Canal, 115 kilometers long, connects the Mittelland Canal west of Wolfsburg with the Elbe near Lauenburg. The canal was built in 1968-1976 to connect the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe.

The current canal had a predecessor that was completed in 1398 ("de nyge graven") and connected the Stecknitz (to the Trave) and Delvenau (to the Elbe) rivers south of Mölln, which were at least usable for transport. Previous transport with ox carts through the swampy area was thus no longer necessary, and the time for the transport (salt!) was halved to 3 weeks. This is from a booklet that can be found at rest stops in Berkenthin!
