A beautiful old lock system with a charming steel bridge over the canal. Here you feel as if you have been transported back to the founding years of the “Elbe-Trave-Canal”. Engineering from the age of steam and a cozy resting place to linger.

When the Elbe-Lübeck Canal was built around 1900 as the successor to the too small Stecknitz-Delvenau Canal, there was still no electricity in the villages.

In contrast to the old canal with its flat prisms and the narrow locks with removable pouring boards, one had to come up with something to move the mighty gates during the lock operations.

August Hotopp devised a new principle: The movement of the gates by using water energy at the different heights of the upper and lower water with the help of hydraulics. Even today, the lock keepers only have to set different levers and turn wheels, and the lock works as if operated by an invisible hand.

In order to save the scarce water on the apex between Mölln and Witzeeze, the upper half of the lock chamber was allowed to drain into a saving basin, after the lock it ran back to the lower part of the chamber without additional energy, and half the water was saved, this one Saving basins are no longer used today.

When the canal was built, the old canal bed was used as far as Büchen after the loops were straightened, so that the Stecknitz in the canal was lost. From the Delvenau there is still the old creek bed east of the canal, which is only a narrow trickle due to the greatly reduced catchment area.

With seven locks, the Elbe-Lübeck Canal overcomes the heights between the Baltic Sea and the Elbe. From the Trave to the apex near Mölln, five locks have to be passed on the northern ascent, and on the southern descent to the Elbe there are two locks.

The canal has no natural water inflows and is therefore fed exclusively by rain and melt water. In times of low rainfall, the locks are therefore reduced to what is absolutely necessary, i.e. only commercial shipping is locked, and recreational shipping has to wait for them to be smuggled along. This can take several hours and must be planned for hiking trips.

The Witzeeze lock is located at canal km 50.8, has a maximum lifting height of 3.28 m and can be reached under the following telephone number: 04155 5891
