The Lauenburg caller is a bronze figure created by the sculptor and sculptor Karl-Heinz Goedtke in 1959, at the suggestion of the then mayor of Lauenburg / Elbe Richard Reuter. It stands in the old town of Lauenburg / Elbe on a forecourt of the Elbstraße next to the restaurant Le Rufer.

The Ruferplatz with the symbolic bronze figure "The Caller" is a popular resting place to look and relax. In the eponymous restaurant "Le Rufer", with coffee and cake or other, you can combine this with the physical well-being.

The Rufer in the beautiful old town of Lauenburg stands in a place with a great view of the Elbe.

There is a small restaurant here with a view of the Elbe and a terrace. Here you can eat well and watch the goings on on the Elbe.

The Lauenburger Rufer is a bronze sculpture created by the sculptor Karl-Heinz Goedtke. The sculpture stands on the banks of the Elbe in Lauenburg's old town and "calls" towards the Elbe or perhaps across the Elbe to Hohnstorf.
The Rufer is definitely a nice photo opportunity. It stands near the berth for the paddle steamer "Kaiser Wilhelm".

The Rufer is a 1.85 m high bronze sculpture by Karl-Heinz Goedtke, which he created in 1959. Dressed like the typical Elbe boatman, he stands here as a symbol of the over 700-year-old tradition of Elbe shipping. His reputation? Many possibilities
Information at his feet: “A boatman whose boat is anchored here and is waiting for cargo from the Stecknitz Canal calls over to a ship passing by on the Elbe. A morning greeting?, some rough fun? An important tip?”
Rubbing his right thumb is said to bring good luck, as you can see from the golden color from the many touches.

Unfortunately, it is not known what the caller is calling. Nevertheless, it has become a landmark.

“Ahoy” the caller calls out to all travelers and passing ships on the Elbe. One of Lauenburg's most famous landmarks is the bronze statue of Karlheinz Goedtke on the Ruferplatz named after her. Numerous boat lines depart from the Ruferanlage for excursion trips on the Elbe and the canals.
The bronze statue “The Rufer” stands next to the historic steamship pier on Lauenburger Elbstrasse. From today's Ruferplatz, a stone box protrudes into the Elbe as a bank fortification. Since the advent of regular steamship traffic between Lauenburg and Hamburg at the end of the 19th century, thousands of "summer visitors" have landed at this pier and thus reached Lauenburg. However, the free space only came into being after the Second World War. In a five-hour artillery attack by British troops on April 29, 1945, three houses on Pier Square were so badly damaged that they were demolished.
Since Lauenburg/Elbe did not have a monument to a special personality, the mayor at the time, Richard Reuter, had the idea of depicting a figure of a boatman as a symbol of the connection between shipping on the Elbe and the city of Lauenburg and as a thank you for the boatmen who have lived and worked in the city for centuries. At the same time, it was intended to serve as a memorial for German-German reunification with the premise “Free up the electricity for us again”. After long discussions with various institutions and associations in the city, the sculptor Karl-Heinz Goedtke, who lives and works in the district, was commissioned to design it. He created, among other things, the Eulenspiegel in Mölln and the sculptures “The Waiting Ones” (at the post office), “Hans im Glück” (Old Youth Hostel) and “International Understanding” (Albinus School) in Lauenburg.
The Rufer was ceremoniously inaugurated on March 22, 1959. Since then it has greeted all guests and passing ships and is a popular photo motif and a beautiful viewing point.

There is an upper and a lower town in Lauenburg. The old town is called the lower town here. You can drive from one part of the city to the other or you can use the steep “Stairs to Heaven” with countless steps on foot. The old town is well worth seeing with its narrow streets and old half-timbered houses, which are home to many nice cafes and arts and crafts. The landmark of the old town is the “Rufer” on the quay. From here you can also take a boat trip on the Elbe. Conclusion: A wonderful old town that you should definitely see.

Probably the most famous statue in Lauenburg and one of the city's landmarks.
A selfie with the Lauenburg Caller is a must when strolling through the Elbe city.
What is the Caller calling out?
The people of Lauenburg still argue about these questions today and everyone has their own idea of what the Caller calls out across the Elbe. You might think that Goedtke deliberately left the question open in order to encourage dialogue between the people of Lauenburg and their guests. It is not for nothing that the inscription at the feet of the 185 cm high statue reads:
A boatman, whose boat is anchored here and waiting for cargo from the Stecknitz Canal, calls out to a passing Elbe ship.
A morning greeting? A bit of rude fun? An important tip?
In any case, a visit to the Caller is a must when visiting the old town of Lauenburg, as touching the shiny, polished thumb brings good luck.
