You are standing in front of the remains of a scale built in 1772, in which the grain from the surrounding villages of Achel, Lille and Hamont had to be weighed. This was to avoid arguments about wrong amounts of grain, because the miller sometimes kept more grain than he was allowed to. The scale was only in service for 30 years.

Opposite the geological garden on the other side of the path and next to the picnic area with covered seating you will find the Waag or, better, ruins. The weigh house was the place where all farmers from Achel, Lille and Hamont had to have their grain weighed. The building was constructed in 1772, a year after the three municipalities took over the milling rights from the then lord. That is a right that obliged farmers to have their grain ground at that lord's mill, also known as the ban mill, a custom that could be found everywhere. The Waag was located between two mills: the Mulke, a watermill that you can also walk to, and the windmill at the Waag itself. In 1800, the Waag windmill was destroyed by a hurricane and in 1804 the stone Napoleon mill in Hamont was built in its place, which you can also see. The French revolutionaries did not want to know about this milling right and so there was no longer a need for a weighing house. It became a farm that remained inhabited until 1956.
