Jan Baptist David, was a canon and professor at the Catholic University of Leuven. He was also foreman of the Flemish Movement and chairman of the Catholic Flemish student union Met Tijd en Vlijt. The Davidsfonds, founded in 1875, is named after him.

Statue of the Lier-born man of letters and historian Jan Baptist David (1801-1886) after whom the Davidsfonds is named. His full-length statue was erected in 1897 by the city on what is now Kardinaal Mercierplein. In 1923 it was transferred to the city walk on the Antwerpsestraat. The monumental bronze statue stands on a bluestone plinth after a design by the Antwerp sculptor Jean-François De Vriendt. Steenhouwer is E. Vandenbrande and the bronze foundry is Gebr. Van Aerschot of Louvain.
