In 1835, a city pump was built on the Vismarkt by order of the then mayor Mast De Vries, by the Lierse master stonemason J.J.G. Nuyens, with ornamentation designed by Louis Auguste Serrure.
19th century city pump in the form of a bluestone column with a city shield and four bronze fish, on a bluestone square base and with a semicircular water basin. The pump crank is still present, as well as the gargoyle in the shape of a man's head. The initials M.D.V. (Mast De Vries) have been installed.

In the past, fresh fish was transported across the Nete in typical flat barges and sold here at the Vismarkt by bidding. At the center is one of the old city pumps from 1835.
