This Zülpicher church was consecrated to Saint Peter, who together with Saint Paul are considered the princes of the apostles. Jesus called the fisherman Simon, whom he called, the surname Peter (rock). The popes of the Catholic Church see themselves as the direct successors of Peter, over whose tomb in Rome St. Peter's Basilica is enthroned.

"St. Peter lies in the Roman heartland of Zülpich." The beginnings of today's church building date back to Salic time, but lacks of medieval building activity, culminating in a late Romanesque new building of the nave, was largely destroyed in a bombing raid in 1944 The construction of the crypt, which has its counterpart at the Bonn Minster and the Siegburg Abbey Church, dates back to around 1060. It consists of two roughly equal parts of the room, of which the northern one below the former long choir, the southern one below the Anno chapel.
