Marienborn Abbey (lat. Fons beatae Mariae) in Zülpich-Hoven is a former Cistercian abbey on the edge of the Eifel. It was founded in 1188 by Cistercian nuns from the monastery of Saint Thomas an der Kyll. One of the most distinguished residents of the monastery was St. Hermann Joseph von Steinfeld, who lived here for a short time and died in 1246. The monastery church, which still exists today, houses the "Hoven Madonna", one of the most important Romanesque sculptures in the Rhineland from the 12th century[1]. In the apse, bricks are built with Roman (not Celtic, as described in the illustrated book at the gate) characters. You can see the Latin inscriptions that point to a matron sanctuary.[2](Wikipedia)

A branch of the Cistercian Sisters from the Diocese of Trier was founded in 1188 on the current site of the Cellitinnen-Marienborn specialist clinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy. St. Hermann-Josef also worked here in the middle of the 13th century. When he died, he was buried in today's monastery church, but a short time later he was transferred to Steinfeld Monastery.
In the middle of the 15th century the monastery was destroyed by a serious fire, and in the Thirty Years' War (1618 - 1648) the monastery was plundered and destroyed again. In 1802, under French occupation, the monastery was secularized and sold. Since 1888 the monastery has been owned by a religious order again; today's Foundation of the Cellite Sisters according to the rules of St. Augustine - Severinstrasse, Cologne.
