The Rhenish Railway Line (Northern Railway)

The "Rheinische Eisenbahngesellschaft" opened the railway line from Düsseldorf via Neanderthal, Mettmann, Hahnenfurth, Elberfeld, Barmen, Gevelsberg, Hagen to Dortmund-Hörde on September 15, 1879. It entered into competition with the Bergisch-Märkischen-Eisenbahngesellschaft. Both routes ran parallel in Wuppertal, often only a few hundred meters away. It was not until 1896 that a connection between the two lines between Vohwinkel and Lüntenbeck was built.

The "Rhenish route", also popularly known as the "Northern Railway", ran in Wuppertal through the northern areas of the districts of Vohwinkel, Elberfeld and Barmen. In the Wuppertal area it had five tunnels and four viaducts and was considered a scenic route with numerous beautiful views of the Wupper valley. In the Vohwinkel area there was the "Dornap-Hahnenfurth" station and the "Wuppertal-Lüntenbeck" stop for passenger traffic until recently. The lime works in the Dornaper area in particular used the route intensively to transport their goods.
