The church building of today's St. Salvatoris Church, first documented in 1230, fell victim to the Elbe floods. However, the stones and furnishings of the previous church were saved from the floods.

In the spring of 1685, the current half-timbered church was rebuilt above the Elbe River with financial support from Hamburg, Lübeck, Bergedorf, and the Vier- and Marschlanden districts using the old materials of the previous church.

Due to the financial situation of the town of Geesthacht, the then-favorable half-timbered style was chosen for the new construction of the church.

The church was consecrated in November 1685 and named "Salvatoris" (Church of the Redeemer).

The wooden bell tower was built between 1686 and 1691. It wasn't until 1841 that St. Salvatoris Church received its galleries to provide sufficient space for the town's growing population.

Not far from the banks of the Elbe River, this romantic half-timbered church now exudes a rural idyll between the city and the Elbe River. It is a popular tourist destination.

Tours of the church are available by appointment.

Built in 1685 half-timbered church on the valley terrace just above the Elbe. The older church was right on the riverbank and was threatened by ice and flood. Then it was broken off, in order to gain the material for the new construction of the church in a safe location. The large-format bricks in the framework should still come from the older church. The wooden belfry of the village church was built in 1691. Inside, the blue star-studded wooden ceiling surprises. The color design corresponds to the tradition of the Vier- and Marschlande.
