The Bistal is a wooded stream gorge system cut deep into the steep slopes and a very beautiful piece of land. The wider path through the western part of the Bistal can also be ridden relatively easily with a normal bike - the narrow path here on the opposite side through the eastern part of the Bistal is more of a mountain bike and hiking route. The Bistal is crossed by the stream coming from the north and belongs in roughly equal parts to the communities of Escheburg and Kröppelshagen-Fahrendorf. The area is about five kilometers from the southeastern border of Hamburg and is located between the Hamburg district of Bergedorf and the city of Geesthacht. The Bistal is therefore located directly in Hamburg's commuter belt in the scenically attractive area between Sachsenwald in the north and the Elbe in the south. It is part of the wooded Geest slope that stretches from Hamburg-Bergedorf via Börnsen and Escheburg to Geesthacht. In prehistoric times, it represented the northern bank of the Elbe glacial valley and lies about 50 meters above the flat marsh.
The Bistal valley was formed about 15,000 to 80,000 years ago, similar to the nearby Dalbekschlucht nature reserve. At that time, namely during the Weichselian Ice Age, the glaciers from the north had come to a standstill in what is now Holstein. The water masses of the melting glaciers dug their way to the
Elbe glacial valley deep into the earth. This is how this 20 to 40 meter deep erosion gorge was created.
The Bistal valley merges into a forest area in the north, which is an offshoot of the unincorporated Sachsenwald.

Coming from the Geest, the path leads above the Bistal in two bends down through a side valley to the Bis. The valleys were created by erosion, especially by meltwater of the last ice age.
