In 1557, under Elector Augustus, a fence was erected from Großröhrsdorf through the Massenei to Stolpen to prevent game from escaping during the hunt. With the construction of the Moritzburg hunting lodge by August the Strong, Stolpen Castle and with it the hunting ground of the mass egg lost its importance, but the Saxon sovereigns continued to organize hunts until 1892. Since 1971, the number of wild boar has increased significantly.[1]
In times of war, the mass egg served as a place of refuge for the residents of the area. On August 11, 1929, the Waldidyll excursion destination west of the Bornematzenbrücke, which no longer exists today, was inaugurated. On June 23, 1935, the mass egg bath was inaugurated. From 1961 to 1991 there was an NVA anti-aircraft missile site at the Kleiner Stern crossing area in a 360-hectare restricted area. Their team building then served for years as a temporary home for asylum seekers.[3][4] Today, the crossing at Kleiner Stern is the starting point for a nature trail. The associated club building burned down in November 2011.[5] In 2013 it was rebuilt as the WaldHaus Kleiner Stern. The legend hiking trail also leads over the Kleiner Stern. It starts at the mass egg bath
