The city, founded at the beginning of the 14th century, was initially called Jochgrim, as the older settlement (today's old town) (attested to since 1297). After the destruction in 1429, the town was rebuilt in its current location closer to the castle area. The name of the chateau gradually passed to the town.

The name Stolpen is based on the old Sorbian word stolp, which refers to the appearance of the basalt columns in the meaning of post or wall (cf. Upper Sorbian stołp, "pillar"; stołpowc, "basalt"). Over the centuries, the spelling changed several times; are handed down u. a. the forms Stolp (1227), Stolpen (1233), Ztolp (1252), Stulpin (1378) and Stolppen (1478).
