The town hall consists of two parts of the building. The Gothic double building with the town hall tower was built between 1250 and 1400. In 1501 the eastern part fell victim to flames, while the western part with the 52 meter high tower has been preserved to this day. At the end of the 16th century, the master builder Leonhard Weidmann, who also built the master builder's house, the Hegereiter house and the hospital bastion, built the eastern part with the Renaissance facade. The Baroque arcade was added at the end of the 17th century. The building is a unique work of art.

The town hall was built in its present form in 1572-78. It is one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in southern Germany. If you want to see Rothenburg ob der Tauber from above, you should climb the 220 steps of the town hall tower - from the viewing platform, visitors can enjoy a wonderful view over the city towards Taubertal and Frankenhöhe.

After walking through the narrow streets of the old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the visitor suddenly finds the center of the city, the market square with its gigantic town hall. The whole ensemble expresses the former civic pride of the Rothenburg population. With its show staircase and the Renaissance facade, the Rothenburg town hall looks all the more like a monumental palace building in the middle of the surrounding romantic half-timbered building. In Rothenburg, people weren't satisfied with a Ratskeller - here the imposing Ratstrinkstube towers over the market square.
