At this point the Hohenstaufen built their imperial castle in 1142. From here ruled King Konrad III. the Empire. From the castle spread the settlement until Rothenburg counted in 1400 to the 10 largest cities of the Holy Roman Empire.

For there are documents that tell of commercial ventures of the father Konrad Toppler and foundations for the construction of the Church of St. John. In 1352, 1354 and 1358 Konrad Toppler belonged to the so-called Inner Council, the city's closest circle of leaders. Only members of patrician families were elected at that time.
