Located on Lake Emma, the sandstone bench was built in 1868 in memory of the legendary Countess Emma between azaleas and rhododendrons on the northwestern shore. The inscription commemorates not only Countess Emma, but also the Bremen Archbishop Hartwig I, who confirmed ownership of the pasture in a document from the city in 1159, as well as the beginning of construction work for the forestation of the Bürgerweide.
The Emmabank also bears the motto of the Bürgerpark: “For master and servant, man, woman and child. For use and joy for all time". On the right side of the middle column, an indentation with the date 1880/81 commemorates the worst flood that the park has experienced to date. This makes the Emmabank the central monument for the park.

In 1032, Countess Emma of Lesum is said to have met a delegation of Bremen citizens while riding with Duke Benno of Saxony and her impressive entourage. The citizens took advantage of the opportunity to complain to the woman, who was known for her charity and piety, about their suffering: they had too little pasture for their cattle. "The countess listened to them with sympathy and promised to help them. She would give them - she said - as much grazing and pasture as a man could handle in an hour," wrote Friedrich Wagenfeld in his book of legends in 1845. Benno of Saxony, the brother of her deceased husband and thus her heir, was concerned about this and commissioned a crippled beggar from the side of the road to walk the area - what meanness! Friedrich Wagenfeld: "Emma got down from her horse, laid her hand on the poor cripple's head as if in blessing and prayed quietly." According to legend, the poor man was still unable to walk after that, but he crawled around the pasture. "And there was a fenced-in pasture, much larger than the citizens had originally hoped and almost too big for their needs." Emma of Lesum actually lived, but the donation of the citizens' pasture almost 1,000 years ago has not been proven. However, the legend led to numerous honors and tributes for the woman, and she is considered the patron of the citizens' park.
