The name of the bridge and the canal it spans commemorates the largest naval battle of the First World War. The German High Seas Fleet and the Grand Fleet of the British Royal Navy fought each other in the waters off Jutland from May 31, 1916 to June 1, 1916 with a total of around 250 ships.

The Skagerrak Bridge is a road bridge in Hamburg's Alsterdorf district, which crosses the Skagerrak Canal near the Alster. An alternative spelling of the name of this beam bridge is "Skagerrak Bridge". Its name is meant to commemorate the Battle of the Skagerrak in 1916. A bridge built in 1914 at the other end of the Skagerrak Canal was called the Western Skagerrak Bridge for a number of years, before acquiring its current name: Rathenau Bridge.

The Skagerrak Bridge was originally built in the 1910s under the Hamburg building director Fritz Schumacher and renovated around 1985. It is 20.80 m long.
