The name of the bridge and the canal it spans commemorates the largest naval battle of the First World War. The German High Seas Fleet and the Grand Fleet of the British Royal Navy fought each other in the waters off Jutland from May 31, 1916 to June 1, 1916 with a total of around 250 ships.

The Skagerrak Bridge is a road bridge in the Alsterdorf district of Hamburg, spanning the Skagerrak Canal near the Alster River. An alternative spelling of this beam bridge's name is "Skagerrak Bridge." Its name commemorates the Battle of Jutland (Skagerrak) of 1916. A bridge built in 1914 at the other end of the Skagerrak Canal was called the Western Skagerrak Bridge for several years before receiving its current name: Rathenau Bridge.

The Skagerrak Bridge was originally constructed in the 1910s under the direction of Hamburg's Director of Construction, Fritz Schumacher, and was renovated around 1985. It is 20.80 meters long.
