The contact zone of two large continental floes near Windischeschenbach north of Weiden was drilled with the largest land drilling rig in the world. The most diverse investigations were made possible by the pilot bore (4000.1 m) sunk from September 1987 to April 1989 and the main bore 200 m away from October 6, 1990 to October 12, 1994 (9101 m); the KTB was the first major German geoscientific project Basic research. The drilling itself presented the technology with unprecedented tasks: At temperatures of up to 300 ° C, at a pressure equivalent to that of a VW Golf of 30,000 per square meter, you had to work vertically in steeply folded, hard rock layers with numerous brittle faults drill. Several problems arose which brought the drilling to a standstill, and because of the unexpectedly higher temperature, the initially desired target depth of 10-14 km could not be fully achieved (these temperatures were only expected at a depth of 12-14 km). Without a doubt, this deep well represents one of the greatest technical masterpieces of all.
