Before the Waldnaabtal Museum moved into the walls of Neuhaus Castle, this historic place had a long history behind it.
The castle was built in 1300 as a hunting lodge. In 1515 it was sold to the Waldsassen monastery and after secularization it became the property of the market town of Neuhaus. Luckily, the castle was spared war damage, so you can visit the magnificent museum there today.

Neuhaus Castle is a spur castle in the homonymous village Neuhaus in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab. A striking feature of the castle is the free-standing so-called butter barrel tower, which is reminiscent of a butter barrel due to its massive base and narrow superstructure. Butter churn towers are not flattened at the top, but carry a second, smaller tower with a smaller diameter. A rarity among the many castles in the Upper Palatinate!
