"The coat of arms was approved on July 31, 1978 by the district president in Münster, after the city of Bottrop was united with the municipality of Kirchhellen (Recklinghausen district) in 1975. Elements of the Kirchhellen and Bottrop coats of arms were combined to form the new coat of arms. The cross of the Teutonic Order (Kruckenkreuz) was probably chosen in reference to the Welheim Commandery. "... The coat of arms of the city of Bottrop shows a black crutch cross in white, covered with a blue shield, with three white wolf hooks in it, which can also be found in the noble Brabeck family.
