The cemetery once housed not only the local deceased,

but also the 226 sailors who lost their lives at Mårup in 1808. The large anchor of "The Crescent" and a memorial plaque still commemorate them today.

While a priest denounced the shameful snatching of corpses by the locals* in 1899,

a survivor published a pamphlet in England shortly after the event, highlighting the exemplary, respectful behavior of the Danish enemies during the shipwreck of the Crescent. This is likely more accurate,

because the people of North Jutland have always lived a rather simple and modest life.

What happens to the dead?

Unfortunately, it does happen again and again that mortal remains end up

on the beach during demolition. They must be handed over to Lønstrup so that they can be

buried in a mass grave near the new church.

The municipality of Lønstrup itself ensures that the beach is regularly searched for human remains. It's not impossible that the next time we take a walk on the beach, it's up to us to contribute to a dignified end and remembrance. The gravestones are stacked up at the anchor.

Lined up with dignity, they still bear the final greetings.

The families were and still are allowed to have a say in when and whether their loved ones' graves are cleared and the remains transferred to Lønstrup. The general dismay must be countered by the fact that not only did Mårup behave respectfully in 1808, but they continue to do so to this day, as far as possible.
