The Knight's Chapel was built in 1799 as the first park architecture on a steep rocky cliff as a small neo-Gothic building with a southeast-facing vestibule.
The columns, arches and the rose window are made of wood.
The weapons, flags and the coat of arms above the entrance door inside the chapel are reminiscent of the romantic period of the Middle Ages.
However, the chapel was not used for religious services.
The original furnishings, the rose window and the halo on the floor indicate that it was used as a meeting place for Freemasons during the time of Duke George I. Duke George I was a Freemason.
In 1998 and 1999 the 42 steps, railings and exterior of the chapel were restored.
If you walk up the narrow, winding stairs to the chapel, you have a wonderful view of the castle, the Devil's Bridge, over the Werra Valley and the park landscape.
