Colonna Square is a rectangular square surrounded by imposing buildings, including the Chigi Palace (seat of the Italian government), the Church of Santi Bartolomeo ed Alessandro dei Bergamaschi, the Wedekind Palace and the Ferraioli Palace.

The column stands in the center of the homonymous square and was built between 180 AD, the year of the death of Marcus Aurelius, and 193 AD. The construction works of the work were completed by Commodus, son and successor of the emperor.
Inspired by Trajan's column, it is 100 Roman feet high - almost thirty meters - and rests on a base of 12 meters, consisting of a pedestal and a base on which the honorary inscription, which has disappeared, was engraved. The base was decorated with reliefs, lost in the restoration carried out by Domenico Fontana in 1589, commissioned by Pope Sixtus V. On that occasion, the bronze statue of St. Paul was placed above the column.
