Circo Massimo, or Circus Maximus in Latin, was the largest stadium for chariot racing in ancient Rome. It was 600 meters long and 140 meters wide, and could accommodate approximately 150,000 spectators. Located in the valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills, the stadium was the scene of many spectacular and exciting races, as well as other events such as gladiator fights, athletic competitions and religious ceremonies. The Circus Maximus was built in the 6th century BC. by King Tarquinius Priscus, and was later expanded and rebuilt by several emperors, such as Julius Caesar, Augustus, Claudius and Domitian. Little remains of the original stadium, except the outline of the racecourse and a few ruins of the stands and arcades. You can visit the site for free and imagine what it used to look like.

The Circus Maximus was the largest venue in Rome for celebrating ludi, which were public games related to Roman religious festivals. Ludi included horse and chariot races, athletics competitions, theatrical performances, gladiator fights, and sometimes even public executions. The largest ludi began with a colorful parade (pompa circensis) that introduced the participants and marked the purpose of the games.
