The Werra is the right, easterly of the two main source rivers of the Weser.
With a course of 299.6 km, the Werra is the longer of the two and flows through Thuringia, Hesse and Lower Saxony.
The left, west-flowing Fulda is only 220.7 km long.
The Werra rises in the Thuringian Slate Mountains near Fehrenbach in southern Thuringia.
After its uppermost course, it mostly flows in northwestern directions through western Thuringia and northeastern Hesse.
In the southeast of Lower Saxony, the Werra unites in Hann. Münden with the Fulda to the Weser, which then flows to the North Sea.
The Werra is a river that has been permanently damaged by brines, and it is debatable whether a good ecological status can ever be achieved again.
The responsible Ministry of the Environment considers this to be impossible.
