It was designed by the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava and together with the Rialto Bridge, the Barefoot Bridge, and the Accademia Bridge are the only ones that cross the Canal Grande in Venice. This bridge was the first to be built in Venice in 125 years in this city. It consists of a single metal arch and has a total length of 94 meters. The width at the ends is 5.58 m and 9.38 m in the center. The maximum height of the bridge in the center of the canal is 9.28 m.

An impressive bridge by Santiago Calatrava!

In the summer of 2007, the construction of a fourth bridge based on designs by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava began. On August 11, 2007, the middle section of the load-bearing structure was installed. To do this, the Grand Canal was closed for several hours. On September 11th, 2008 the bridge was inaugurated as "Ponte della Costituzione". The 94-meter-long bridge with steps enables commuters and bus travelers to get to Santa Lucia train station directly from the parking lots and the bus station in Piazzale Roma.

The Constitution Bridge (known as the Calatrava Bridge) is the pedestrian bridge that crosses the Grand Canal connecting Piazzale Roma to the Venezia Santa Lucia railway station. Designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, it was opened to pedestrian traffic on 11 September 2008.

It is an arched bridge with a span of 81 meters, a width of 6 meters at the base and 9 in the center for a height of 10 meters at its peak. The steel structure supports glass floors from Saint-Gobain, Istrian stone and Classic Gray Trachyte from Montemerlo. The parapets are also made of glass, with brass handrails. LED bulbs are installed inside the handrails which dissipate the light beam into the parapets.

The works began in 2003. The time expected for its completion was estimated at 456 days but lasted for 6 years. The cost of the work is around 11.3 million euros, to which must be added 1.8 million euros for the cable car, a figure which significantly exceeds the 6.7 million euros foreseen in the tender.
