    With the "Neue Lusthaus" as the stage of the Württembergischer Hof, the history of the opera in Stuttgart reaches back to the 17th century. The Renaissance building on Schlossplatz, which had been modernized several times over the years as a theater, was destroyed in a fire in 1902. Only a staircase has been preserved, which can be seen today in the Middle Castle Garden. The new Royal Court Theater was rebuilt in 1909-1912 by the Munich architect Max Littmann as a double theater with opera house and theater. One of the first performances after the inauguration was the premiere of Richard Strauss' "Ariadne auf Naxos", conducted by the composer himself. After World War II, only the Great House decorated with classical columns remained for the Stuttgart Opera and the Stuttgart Ballet receive.



    First performances of Handel's "Rodelinde", Hindemith's "Mathis der Maler" or the first German-language "Falstaff" production followed. The premiere was Oskar Schlemmer's "Triadic Ballet". The first and premiere tradition with works by Hindemith, Orff, Penderecki, Glass, Zender, Riehm, Hölszky and Thomalla has been and continues to this day. Well-known bandmasters were active in Stuttgart like the Italian composer Niccolò Jommelli, who wrote 20 operas for the Stuttgart Opera, Rudolf Zumsteeg, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Peter von Lindpaintner and Carl Maria von Weber, in recent times Carlos Kleiber, Vaclav Neumann, Silvio Varviso as well as Riccardo Chailly.         Since the 17th century, opera, ballet and drama performances have taken place in Stuttgart in the ballroom of the Neues Lusthaus. The Singspiel The Robbery of Proserpina (1660) by the Stuttgart Court Kapellmeister Samuel Capricornus is considered to be the first opera performance.[3]



        Four years later, fixed stage installations can be verified (1664).[4] In 1750 the New Lusthaus was converted into an opera house and in 1811 and 1845 into the Royal Court Theater. In 1902 it burned down. From 1902 to 1912, a provisional interim theater was used.[5][6]



        Between 1909 and 1912, the theater building at the current location was built by the architect Max Littmann from Munich as a double theater with a large and small house. After the fall of the monarchy, the Royal Court Theaters were renamed the Württemberg State Theaters. Since 1924 the building has been a listed building. After World War II, only the Great House, with its columns, remained. The war not only left destruction in its wake, but also changed the intellectual and moral thinking of the Germans. Due to the scarcity of food, spiritual hunger filled theatres, concerts and lecture halls.[FM 1]



        From 1959 to 1962 a new small house was built by the architects Hans Volkart, Kurt Pläcking and Bertam Perlia. In 1983 the chamber theater was opened in the building of the New State Gallery designed by the British architect James Stirling. By 1984, the Great House had been extensively renovated; the design of the auditorium, which had been almost completely destroyed by renovations in the 1950s, was restored to its 1912 state according to the original plans. In 2001, the theaters were renamed the Opera House and the Playhouse. In 2010 the Studiobühne Nord was opened in the newly built rehearsal center of the Staatstheater.
