The so-called church town of Arvidsjaur is unique.
The typical gähtie huts with their square wooden construction and pyramid-shaped roof have been preserved here. The church town played an important role in northern Sweden: the buildings grouped around the church served as a place for the visiting Sami to stay and meet for the most important holidays - baptisms, weddings and funerals.
This is where they met with relatives and friends. The Sami town is now a listed building; however, it is not an open-air museum, but is still in use. The tradition is still alive here!

As can be found in many places in northern Sweden, it is a church town. This one is still used by the Sami every year at the end of August as part of a big festival. In the 17th century, the Sami lived here in order to be able to fulfill their church duties.
