The water tower serves as a key component of the Höllental hydroelectric power plant. Its primary function is to absorb the kinetic energy of the water, which is piped to the power plant through a long pipeline, in the event of a sudden turbine shutdown, thus preventing pressure spikes. The tower is open at the top, and the water rises several meters when necessary to protect the hydroelectric power plant's pipelines.

In order to exploit the hydropower of the Selbitz in the Franconian Höllental, you need a steep gradient. The valley of the river cannot do this. The water is dammed at a weir almost 2 kilometers in front of the power plant and fed to the power plant via pipes. There it is temporarily stored in a water tower and then fed to the turbine from a height of just over 30 meters
