Generous park area at the Aussenalster with beautiful old trees and a wide view of the city. Very popular running track and several jetty.

The wide strip of green on the west bank of the Alster is one of the most beautiful places in Hamburg's city center with the special flair of nature in front of a cityscape. However, the big city is also noticeable here in other ways: it is almost always full at the weekend. If you do not like to be in crowds, it becomes unbearable on beautiful summer weekends at the latest from noon.

Cycling is prohibited on the riverside path. Some cyclists still try their luck, but with a large crowd you can only go at walking pace - or push.

Dogs must be kept on a leash. However, there is a large (unfenced) free-running area on one of the Alster meadows.

Otherwise there are a lot of joggers out here. The slightly over 7 km long loop around the Außenalster is the classic among Hamburg's jogging routes.

Incidentally, the numerous gray geese that are now back in Hamburg and the Alster foothills are also interesting. The gray geese graze there on the lawns and are very trusting. This is another reason why it is appropriate to keep dogs on a leash so that the gray geese do not have to flee. At times they are also unable to fly and then unfortunately it happens again and again that a goose is killed by a dog.
Interestingly, these gray geese, although not shy, are wild birds. It is not uncommon for them to fly to the Hamburg area or even to the Netherlands. If you stay outside of Hamburg, you have the normal escape distance of all wild geese - several hundreds of meters.
Many greylag geese are ringed in blue, so you know exactly where the geese are and when.

Hamburg is so diverse for hiking. No matter whether right in the center, on the Elbe, in the park or in one of the many surrounding forests, I am always surprised how green Hamburg is. Hamburg wants to be discovered. Dare and go out

The widest section of the Alsterpark is the Alster Vorland. The Alstervorland on the northwestern shore of the Alster was redesigned in 1953 as part of the International Garden Show IGA 1953. The large lawn directly on the water with Japanese cherry trees, several sculptures of different artists and the typical white park chairs is for many residents one of the most beautiful places in Hamburg.

In this area there is biking prohibition and it is probably controlled from time to time.

The widest section of the Alster Park is the Alster foothills. The Alster foothills on the north-west bank of the Outer Alster were redesigned in 1953 as part of the International Garden Show IGA 1953. The large sunbathing area right on the water with Japanese cherry trees, several sculptures by various artists and the typical white park chairs is one of the most beautiful places in Hamburg for many residents.

Hamburg is a metropolis of millions and the Außenalster has always been Hamburg's playground, especially when the sun is shining. So don't be surprised if it gets full. Quiet times are early morning, when most are still asleep.

A little tip for early risers, just early to the Alster and enjoy the sunrise, by the way applies to a lot of places in the city. It is great when the city awakens and you still have peace to enjoy it.

In 1952, the natural areas on the Outer Alster were designed as a park and recreational area. On the green banks of the Alster in Harvestehude, in the Alster foreland, you will find one of Hamburg's most popular parks. Along the waterfront promenade you can watch the sailors or enjoy the panorama. You can take a walk in the parks or enjoy the sun on the spacious meadows. The park is perfect for jogging and cycling.

Until the 12th century, the Alster was a narrow river that meandered from its source in what is now Henstedt-Ulzburg through a swampy landscape to the Elbe.
With the construction of two dams in 1189 and 1235, the Alster was dammed to form two artificial lakes, the Great and the Small Alster. The dams offered protection from high tides and were used to operate the mills.
The reservoir was an important water reservoir and protected the approximately 1,000 residents of the city of Hamburg from enemy attacks.
Agriculture and horticulture shaped the use of the surrounding land.
The nuns of the Cistercian monastery of Herwardeshude from 1295 used the western Alster foreland for centuries to grow flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetables.
The wet Alster meadows served as pastures for cattle and horses.

Many street names around the Klosterstern are reminiscent of this influential nunnery, which soon owned more land than the city of Hamburg.

As a result of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved and the nuns moved to the St. Johannis Monastery, which still exists today as a Protestant women's convent on Heilwigstrasse in Eppendorf.

The Alster foreland was created as a swampy and frequently flooded meadow when the Alster was dammed in the 13th century. It was used seasonally as grazing land until the 19th century. From 1850 onwards, the water level of the Alster was lowered by one meter with the construction of new locks; the meadows were thus largely drained. When the properties on Harvestehuder Weg were developed, the owners laid out their gardens in the Alster foreland. Building was excluded according to the building regulations of the 19th century, which were incorporated into the Outer Alster Ordinance in 1953. As early as the end of the 19th century, the chief civil engineer Franz Andreas Meyer (1837–1901) planned a ring road around the Alster, which was to allow public access to the banks; in the 1902 development plan, the Harvestehuder foreland was designated as a public green space. But it was only after Mayor Max Brauer passed a resolution in the Senate in 1950 to expropriate the small private gardens that a public park could be created.
The implementation took place in 1953 on the occasion of the International Horticultural Exhibition (IGA).
According to the design of the garden architect Gustav Lüttge (1909–1968), the Harvestehuder part of the Alsterpark was laid out with a promenade, bridges, a roundabout, sculptures and a pond.
The Alsterpark runs all the way around the Outer Alster. The Alster foreland also contains the Alster shipping ferry docks, the Alte Rabenstraße dock at the beginning of Harvestehuder Weg and the Fährdamm dock roughly in the middle.

The Alster foreland in Harvestehude begins on Harvestehuder Weg west of the Krugkoppelbrücke. Originally this was pastureland. Plans to create a public park here were already in place at the end of the 19th century. The plan was implemented for the International Horticultural Exhibition in 1953. Before that, private garden plots, some of which extended to the shore, were bought back, and some were even expropriated.
