August Hermann Francke was a German Protestant theologian, pastor, teacher and hymn writer. He was one of the main representatives of Halle Pietism and founded the Francke Foundation in 1698, which still exists today.

Since its founding in 1698, the Francke Foundations have hosted a variety of cultural, scientific, educational and social institutions. Pastor August Hermann Francke used a larger donation of "four thalers and 16 groschen", which was given in Easter 1695 into the poor box of his rectory, as a basis for the structure of the facilities.
The Francke Foundations are on the list of proposed UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
