A road that simply has to be ridden if only to boast that you've ridden Yorkshire's highest road. The top of it is 602 metres above sea level.

Unfortunately the surface isn't great, especially not near the entrances and exits to the roadside farms, so that's probably why the Tour de Yorkshire et al haven't taken this road. Also it's really narrow so hopefully you won't meet any traffic.

It's steep, beautiful, with a flattish section about 2/3 of the way up before it ramps back up. There's the usual debate about which approach is harder (Buckden–Hawes, or Hawes-Buckden), and leaving from Hawes tends to come out on top as the hardest option. Nice descent if you do the easy side though! It's steeper from Hawes but quite a straight line so nice to pick up speed.

      3월 17, 2021

The initial kick up at 17% is merely a loosener for what lies the other side of a flatter road that picks its way through farm buildings before revealing a featureless landscape scarred by a single strip of tarmac

        7월 18, 2019

Definitely a fun descent into Hawes - be wary though, the surface isn't great, and the gradient means you can easily exceed 50 mph. Passing through a line of potholes at such speeds was slightly disconcerting.

          8월 12, 2019

Unbelievably steep near the top (starting from Hawes)

            Top 100 climbs 50

Fleet Moss, the highest road in Yorkshire, is a beast from either direction, but the greater challenge lies in the route south from Hawes. Through Gayle the road is flat, hugging the river before rising up sharply for a short 17% lung-opener. It all but levels off as you pass various farm buildings, where the surface is broken and covered with the mud and debris from passing tractor tyres. After a few slight rises the road surface dramatically improves and stretches far into the distance, forming the shortest route over the featureless ridge.
populated by wandering sheep, the road steepens relentlessly, leaving nowhere to hide as you click through the gears hoping to find a large enough sprocket to keep moving. Eventually you are rewarded with a blissfully flat stretch, but it's not over yet - round a left-hand bend is yet more 20% gradient, a final zig-zag, and a few last kicks, which take you to what feels like the top of the world.

Deserted road to Hawes with very steep sections. View above is fantastic, you have the feeling in the 'Highlander' play along :-) the sheep jump z.T. over the low stone walls, not without on the descent ...

Great sense of achievement on arriving at the top. Amazing views.

                  8월 14, 2020

Cracking from both sides. From Gayle there’s a little ramp to welcome you. Then it’s easy going for a while before steadily winding up. That you can see what’s in store is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it’s not too far away. On the other hand, you are going so slowly that it’s still a while before you crest the crux!

From Wharfdale, things kick off at the tiny village of Oughtershaw. Successive ramps with little respite. Just before the top there is a short 20% section. Light the match & you should clear it before your fingers get burned.

Descent to Hawes is rapid. It’s not technical, so let it rip!

Descent into Wharfdale is more complex but probably more rewarding. A sharp left/right can take you by surprise about 800m from the top. Keep watching ahead.

                  Enjoy!

Grinding out of Gayle, the road rolls south-westwards, Passing a few farms, you may catch a glimpse of the challenge ahead. The road reaches skyward. It doesn't seem that far, but you're not going fast... Save some oomph for the last two ramps, you'll need it. Conquer these & easier climbing leads to the summit with views of Semer Water, Bainbridge & Askrigg (in the far distance).

Fleet Moss is a long exposed climb between Buckden and Hawes. At it’s peak it climbs to just over 600 metres in altitude, with a maximum gradient of 20% (from Hawes).

Unfortunately it was dark and there was torrential rain once I got tot he top, so I didn't hang around to take in the view.

                        6월 13, 2023

Fleet Moss looks daunting and it is. Gets steeper towards the "end" but it's not the end you think. Eases off after false summit but back to the grind to the high spot

                          8월 14, 2023

The ‘must ride’ climb in the Dales. Painful and long from either North or South. Great views from the top.
Wharfdale on the South side is spectacular.

                            11월 12, 2023

What a climb! Its a small road that leads from nowhere to almost nowhere so traffic is almost non-existent, meaning you get the opportunity to really soak up the remoteness of this beautiful area as you climb. I'd recommend climbing from the south (from Buckden) for a sustained by manageable climb with unbelievable views throughout. Take care on the descent down towards Hawes though - its incredibly steep and straight, and suddenly a bit pot-holey!
