    Also known as the ‘Cote de Buttertubs’ if you were watching the 2014 Tour. Don’t let its cutesy name fool you – this 4.5km ascent touches 17% in parts

      Set in beautiful Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales, Buttertubs pass is a classic climb for road cyclists. The ascent from the northern side is perhaps more popular, although the southern side is more steady.

      Expect to climb up to 1,740 feet (530 m) with gradients of up to an eye-watering 20%, and don't forget to enjoy the descent afterwards!

        Top 100 Climbs 49

        The giant Buttertubs Pass is brilliant to climb from either direction. The south side kicks up steep then gradually alleviates as it approaches the top, but the north is the toughest, with two sectors of brutal gradient to conquer. Leaving the B6270 from Thwaite, Cliff Gate Road is tough straightaway, with a stretch of 14% that although easing slightly, doesn't allow for rest. The immaculate surface pulls you towards an Alpine-style-zig-zag of hairpins. The gradient is a fearsome 25% here - switching right, left, then right again, you must keep your momentum through these sharp corners.
        Unfortunately your reward is a gaping cattle gride, with gaps so large whole cows could slip through them. A sharp snaking downhill (the sheer drop to the left fenced off) takes you on to the final section. With the summit in sight you have to heave your bike up yet another 20% section that will have you begging the climb to end.

          Tough from both sides - best from the North

            Did this from the south side but judging by the 50mph descent after this I would imagine it is pretty tough from the north side. From the south it is about 2.4 miles at an average of 7%, it's toughest about half way up where a section hits around 18%, some great views and all in all a good road.

            If you are coming from the north it is more like 9% for 1.3 miles

              From the summit there is a short descent, at which point you can pull over to inspect the butter tubs – deep limestone gullies where the farmers of Swaledale would leave their butter that had not sold in the market at Hawes: saving them hauling it up the hill the next market day.

                Nothing to fret about and the ride from Hawes is steady. Great views all the way up and down. Not as challenging as Fleet Moss or Tan Hill.

                  Fantastic loop from Hawes to Muker then Cross tops to Askridge then steady back to Hawes . The climbs are tough but an awesome ride

                      Famous climb! Tougher from the north with a real sting in the tail, usually into a heavy wind. Great descending in either direction. A bit of caution required at the Swaledale end as there are a couple of significant corners. Keep looking well ahead & all will be good!

                        One of the most iconic climbs I'm the whole of Britain, and for good reason. If you climb from the south side (from Hawes) you can relive the famous scenes from the opening day of the 2014 Tour de France, then descend into Swaledale on one of the most spectacular ribbons of tarmac in the country
