For those tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks in the traditional counterclockwise direction, Pen-y-Ghent is the first summit you reach. At 2,277 feet (694 m), it's the smallest of the three but boasts incredible views of the golden landscape. With decent paths and a few scrambles to boot, it's the perfect warm-up for what's to come.

Great starter mountain to get you used to the opportunities out there in the rest of the Dales. Good tracks, steep in some parts, and a good beginners' scramble up and over the snout. Don't forget when climbing towards the top, turn around to take in the view.

My sixth ascent of this stunning mountain (my favourite of the Yorkshire Three Peaks). I've hiked it in summer and winter, rain, sun, snow, and even seen a cloud inversion from the summit. I've camped close to the trig point and I've run up and down it too! It's a true Yorkshire Dales classic.

Lowest of the Three Peaks
Pen Y Ghent means "hill on the border" in Cumbric Language, which is a variety of common Brittonic language spoken during the middle ages in the "old north" (Hen Ogledd) It is closely related to "old welsh".

Geography
Millstone grit top upon a bed of carboniferous limestone. Summit acts as a watershed with water flowing east into the river Skirfare and onto to the Humber Estuary. Water flowing west into the river Ribble and onto the Irish Sea.

Pen-Y-Ghent is my favourite peak to climb there's a little bit of a scramble near the top giving you a sense of how high you are.

Hiking up the looming impressive bulk of photogenic Pen-y-Ghent on a brilliant sky blue day is a cracking day out. There is a sharp pull up through the rocky cliffs to the trig pointed top from the Horton end, but it is all worth it. There are beautiful views to be had on the top, and it is much easier than it looks. One of the classic hills of the Dales.

🚂 A classic starting point is Horton-in-Ribblesdale; which is accessible by train.
I would recommend to take the Brackenbottom Path up and descent via the Pennine Way as:
- The scramble near the summit is easier going up than down
- You would be going against hoards of other hikers on the way down the Brackenbottom path and cause difficulties for others on the narrow paths.
In particular if there is a 3 peaks event on the day.
🚌 You can also start it from Helwith Bridge; which is accessible by bus.
