Here you walk along the Green Belt. The green strip runs along the former inner German border and transforms the former death strip into a nature experience.

The patrol route was created to ensure that the GDR border security controls could quickly reach each section of the border. It ran behind the border fortifications and is still easily recognizable today thanks to the concrete slabs laid out and has been almost completely preserved.

The old concrete route is not so pleasant for walking, but the piece of landscape is all the more beautiful.

Even after 30 years, you can still see the massive interventions in nature at that time in many places. The infinite Kollonnenwege are just one example. The mega-wide clearings and the artificially created open spaces are also silent witnesses.

Downhill on the Kolonenweg is rather uncomfortable.

If you're walking with sticks, it's rather tricky to walk on the concrete slabs with the rectangular holes that are partly not filled to the top with soil/gravel. I got caught a few times with the tip in the holes and almost broke off the tip. But maybe I was just too busy thinking that the division of Germany was once bloodily "defended" in this way. It's a good thing that the only risk there now is a stick breakage.

Once hiking on the column path.
Here it is partly steep downhill / uphill.

This was once the eastern end of the world. At least, of the Western world. With a heavily fortified border and a five-kilometer-wide, strictly controlled exclusion zone, the GDR sealed itself off from the Federal Republic of Germany. Nowhere along the almost 10,000-kilometer-long Iron Curtain, which separated the Warsaw Pact states from those of NATO from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea, was the border as impassable as here. Until the fall of 1989, border crossings were built here as well, fences were dismantled, and Germany's longest-serving border museum soon opened in Schifflersgrund. Since then, nature has gradually reclaimed these areas, which are protected as Germany's largest biotope network. Animal, fungal, and plant species that have become rare elsewhere have found a home here and can reproduce undisturbed.

Since 2018, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, and Brandenburg have placed their portions of the Green Belt under special protection as a National Natural Monument. Hesse was the first western German state to follow this decision in January 2023.

If you hike the P16 clockwise and come from the Altenstein castle ruins down towards Sickenberg, the hiking trail leads down to Sickenberg on the former Kolonnenweg. From here you also have a great view up to the Nase rock massif.
The Kolonnenweg is not particularly easy to walk, but it clearly brings back thoughts of the time of the division of Germany (and especially what it was like here back then).
