Some of the old monastery wall is in poor condition: chunks of stone are falling out of the walls, and some of the masonry is soaked through. In order to preserve the wall for posterity, the monastery wall has been renovated since 2021.

Waldsassen had already at the end of the Middle Ages a late Gothic ring wall, which was created around 1450 as protection for the monastery complex. The remainder of the ring wall was comprehensively restored from 1970 onwards.

The fire of 1648 destroyed the wooden fortifications of the abbey castle. After 1670, the burned out castle was rebuilt and the adjacent buildings were rebuilt. Remains of the ring wall are preserved, so the western round tower as a pavilion. Foundations of the northern tower and the southern gate tower are still present, from the eastern tower lacks any trace. The outer moat wall is also still largely preserved. There is now the guesthouse St. Joseph accommodated.
