According to legend, the first settlers of the Waldsassen monastery settled here on Schirndinger Strasse in the direction of Münchenreuth in 1127. Under Abbot Eugen Schmid (1724-44) a chapel and a hermitage were built here. In 1810, the buildings were demolished. The Gerwigkreis Waldsassen built this memorial in 1974 with stone and a double beam cross made of granite.

Gerwig is said to have retreated to solitude in the Nordwald with companions. Gerwig and Diepold recognized themselves as former friends again. Gerwig is said to have nearly killed Diepold at a tournament earlier. He was so appalled that he went to atonement in the Benedictine monastery Siegburg near Cologne.

When Abbot Kuno became bishop of Regensburg in 1126, he took Gerwig with him as his advisor. So Gerwig came to the woods of the Diocese of Regensburg. It was a pleasure to see him again, and Count Diepold donated the land to the monk Gerwig for a monastery that a man could walk around in one day. The monastery was to be built only at Köllergrün. Because of the fish wealth, it was built in 1133 in the Wondre Valley. Gerwig got monks from Volksrode and Thuringia to revive it. In 1727 the monks built a hermitage in Köllergrün with a chapel for hermits. In the course of secularization, the monks had to leave the hermitage. The chapel and chapel were demolished in 1810.
