An elevated railway viaduct meanders through the middle of the Siemensstadt housing estate. Between Siemensdamm and Jungfernheideweg, the “Tausendfüßler” forms the district border.

But nothing has been running here for a long time. It used to be very different. 90 years ago, a train would have rushed past every five minutes. Its job: to take Siemens employees to their workplaces. 60,000 people worked at Siemens at the time. Only a fraction of them lived in the nearby factory housing estates.

Even in the late imperial era, the tram was hopelessly overwhelmed with transporting Siemens employees. The city of Berlin was too tight at the time to find a solution itself. Siemens had the means and the know-how and therefore built it itself. In 1929, the railway line between Siemensstadt and Jungfernheide opened and cut through the housing estate that was just being planned.

On December 13, 1929, Siemens and the Deutsche Reichsbahn presented the new Siemensbahn in Berlin to the public, and official operations began five days later. The journey on the 4.7-kilometer-long route from Jungfernheide S-Bahn station via Wernerwerk and Siemensstadt stations to Gartenfeld took less than ten minutes, and trains ran every five minutes during rush hour. The gap between the Ringbahn and the Siemensstadt district of Spandau, which was highly praised in the daily press and trade press at the time, has, however, been living a shadowy existence for four decades and is one of Berlin's most famous "lost places." This is set to change in the near future as part of the "new Siemensstadt" project.
