Built in the 1930s, the school served its original purpose as a Protestant and Catholic elementary school until the end of the 1960s, before being converted into a community center with a ballroom.

It also served as a filming location for Edgar Reitz's Hunsrück epic "Heimat," and the forecourt was completely renovated in 2001.

Filming location of the new Edgar Reitz film "The Other Homeland" - Filmmaker Reitz transported the Hunsrück village of Gehlweiler back in time 150 years.

In his new film "The Other Homeland," Reitz describes the fate of Hunsrück emigrants to Brazil. The story takes place between 1840 and 1843, before the previous film adaptations. Crop failures, famines, and arbitrary government action caused endless hardship. For thousands, emigration to Brazil was the only way to escape the misery. The three-hour film centers on the story of two brothers from the Hunsrück who emigrate to Brazil because of the ongoing famine. As in "Homeland," the filmmaker focuses on the Simon family of blacksmiths from Schabbach – but 150 years earlier. The focal point is the historic blacksmith shop in Gehlweiler, which was also featured in the first local adaptation. As is typical of Reitz, the film tells a complex story in many images and at a variety of locations. The aim is to create a comprehensive and faithful depiction of the era. To achieve this, the center of Gehlweiler had to be completely transformed. Several decorative buildings were erected around the historic blacksmith shop, including farms, a school, an inn, a church, a cemetery, and a bakery. The modern road surface was visually transformed into a clay and cobblestone street. Time has also been turned back in time in many interiors with open fireplaces, handmade furniture, and long-forgotten tools and equipment.
