Location: The Kruisherenkerk - Diest
The Kruisherenkerk or Sint-Barbarakerk is the only Baroque church in Diest. Before the church was built, there was a chapel of the archers' guild dedicated to patroness Saint Barbara, which is why the church is also called the Saint Barbara Church. The Kruisherenkerk is a former monastery church and was built between 1656 and 1667 in brick and ironstone.
Inside this church are some interesting altars and confessionals from the 17th and 18th centuries. On the gable is the emblem of the Augustinians by whom the church was originally built. This simple one-aisled building has remained quite sober. This is because the financial situation of the Augustinians at the time of construction was not spectacular.
Under French rule, the church was used as a warehouse, but since 1845 the church has been owned by the Crosier Order, who had it thoroughly restored in 1896. The church has been a protected monument since 1944. And in 2012, the church was bought by the non-profit organization Sint-Annendael Grauwzusters. The church will be given a new purpose and there will be eighty retirement home rooms and a number of assisted living apartments. The Kruisherenkerk or Sint-Barbarakerk is located on the corner of Guido Gezellestraat and Kattenstraat in Diest. The inside of the church is NOT open to the public.
