The former heathland on the Houterenberg and around the Pinnekenswijer was almost completely forested and wooded. The Agency for Nature and Forest has cleared these heather areas open again to give the heath species a helping hand. The result is a beautiful piece of nature that gives this area an enormous added value!

Certainly not only to visit when the heath is purple, a picture in every season and beautiful restoration of nature. For me the most beautiful and quietest place within the wider context of Gerhagen. In addition to this 'closed' piece of heathland in the Houterenberg reserve (towards the Houterenberg diestiaanheuvel where it is located), there is also a beautiful piece if you follow the hiking trail at the Jagershuis on the other side of the road. But this piece is really special.

The Houterenberg is a witness hill or diestian hill and is therefore one of the northeastern foothills of the Hageland, although the region of the Houterenberg is part of the Kempen. This makes it a sandbank that remained when the sea that once came here retreated. After a period of many changes in the landscape, recent deforestation has led to the formation of inland dunes, heaths and fens. In 1988, the Houterenberg-Pinnekenswijer area was recognized as a nature reserve. Today, after many years of striving for open water, grazing, felling young trees in the heath to prevent reforestation and the sod cutting of grassed heathland, this piece of heathland that Houterenberg has today is a fine example of the typical heath landscape with inland dunes which is very nice to walk in and is very similar to the heathland areas that you will find on the other side of the Turnhoutsebaan in Averbode Bos & Heide (which is also largely in Tessenderlo). Pinnekenswijer (or Pinnekensweier) is located slightly further north in the middle of the Gerhagen nature reserve. There are two paths that lead from Engsbergen (part of Tessenderlo) over the Houterenberg to Gerhagen. One is best known to cyclists and does not pass directly on this piece of heathland, the other does (the most western). There is also a walk to Houterenberg that starts in Gerhagen, brochures are available in the Bosmuseum.
