The bridge was built in 1927 on behalf of the shipping company Hamburg Süd by the steel construction company H.C.E. Eggers built, then called blockhouse bridge and served in particular as a jetty for passenger ships overseas. During the Second World War, the bridge was destroyed, partly because a floating crane rammed it. From 1957 to 1968 it was built on the renewal of the bridge, initially hung temporarily catwalks in the carrier, then put the bridge from old stocks of the Office of Electricity and Port Authority together.

From the Überseebrücke ran until the 1970s, the ferry to England and long-haul cruise ships. Today, it mainly serves berth of the museum ship Cap San Diego, also make smaller cruise ships, warships domestic and foreign fleets and active museum ships here. During the port's birthday, she is regularly visited by historic sailing boats such as the Sedov.
