    Between 1854 and 1874, a basin of the old Brussels port occupied this site. The Sint-Kathelijnekerk took the place of an old building dating from the 15th century, of which only the baroque bell tower survived. Joseph Poelaert will manage the construction site and plant an eclectic building, playing with Gothic shapes and baroque decoration. He is inspired by the French churches of the 16th century. The main nave in sandstone rests on a solid substructure in reinforced blue stone, which is further supported by flying buttresses that ensure the necessary balance of the whole. The simplicity on the inside is enhanced by the white plaster on the walls. The homogeneous church furniture in Neo-Renaissance style was made by the Goyers brothers from Leuven.

      The Sint-Katelijnekerk is a church in the north of the Brussels pentagon, on the Sint-Katelijneplein. Except for a baroque tower, the medieval church has been replaced by a 19th-century building by Joseph Poelaert.
